This story perhaps drives home the point better than any how much coaching matters. I knew how fucked the coaching situation was at Miami with similar evidence. They never knew what to do with Sam Shields. He gets picked up by Green Bay in the bazillionth round because they see how physically gifted he is, and the guys in the NFL who actually know what they're doing are like, "corner!"

So they get him in, and a piece comes out in a Milwaukee paper about how this kid who they picked up in the late rounds is lighting it up in training camp. So they get into it and talk about how Shields is kicking ass and they can't figure out why he wasn't a star at Miami. Then as training camp progresses, they figure it out: the kid had shitty coaching in college. Oh, they didn't come right out and blast Shannon and Fester, but they were pretty transparent about it. They marveled at how the kid didn't understand basic defensive formations and the reasons for those formations, and most of all he didn't know how to watch film and break it down. They were shocked by that.

Shields has been a stud in the NFL, has pro bowls under belt, a SB ring, author of a bunch of huge plays for the Packers ( I think he had a pick six in the SB or NFC Champ. game), etc. etc. Just reset the market for his position the other day signing a huge contract.

And this is the kid they couldn't figure out what to do with at Miami. DB, Receiver, back to DB, back to receiver, kick return specialist, on and on and on.

5'11", blazing fucking speed, big vertical, and (here goes) great hips, and I KNEW what to do with him. How come the dumb fucks making millions in charge in Coral Gables couldn't figure it out???? There was a time the kid wasn't even starting at ANY position in college. And he spends 5 fucking minutes with people who know what they're doing and he's playing like a high first round draft pick.

Tell me again how coaching doesn't matter.
