Remember the announcers were confused why he'd challenge when it was on the other side of the field? True, the booth could have called for it. The real reason was to give his team a break and slow down husky momentum. Stanford's D was on the field for most of the 4th quarter and was not ready for the next play. Could have called a TO but with a challenge you have the chance of getting the TO back essentially. In retrospect it was a great call by Shaw. UW had all the momentum and had the perfect tempo for the next play.
