Jones gained a career-high 223 yards in 18 carries. Ware gained 130 yards in 20 carries. The pair made a bet the morning of the game over who would get 200 yards first, a clear sign they were aware of Cal’s inept defense.
This will likely lead to talk next week about how Jones finally rediscovered his form after a disappointing first seven games.
“There’s a ticking time bomb ready to go off,” USC coach Clay Helton said. “You knew he was getting ready to explode.”
But how can anyone tell when Cal’s defense was atrocious? This was like one of those games where former quarterback Cody Kessler shredded Colorado’s secondary for seven touchdowns. It really demonstrated nothing other than the fact Kessler was great against poor teams.
If Jones can put up something similar against Washington, he might eclipse quarterback Sam Darnold for performance of the season.
“Most definitely, I think I can continue this (against teams like Washington),” Jones said.
