This is a "See they ARE doing something" damage control story.

What crime did he commit? It's not clear to me.

    I hope you're being sarcastic.

personally I think it is a serious violation of 1st amendment rights. How can you determine if he was kidding or not? That's all it was -- just internet talk.

The line gets drawn at threatening to mass murder people. It wasn't a Hitler or genocide joke, and it wasn't an isolated incident.

    too subjective.

What is subjective about his quote:

"I live in Seattle and go to UW, that's all (I'll) give you. (I'll) make sure I kill only women, and many more than what Elliot accomplished."

There is nothing subjective about those statements, read the article.

Is that a crime to say that? It's pretty general and not against a specific person. Sounds more like they need to commit him to a mental institution.

I think think you said you were going to make Steve Bowman into a PLSS type cripple. Should you be arrested?

Dude, are you SERIOUSLY equating a jest on here to an obviously unstable person threatening to murder numerous individuals? It would take the cops or the NSA about 5 seconds to realize that this place isn't a serious medium for discussion. And last time I checked, no one is calling the police because they are disturbed by the content that is posted here.

There was no sign that this person was speaking in jest.

I agree the guy likely needs to be institutionalized, but in this case I don't have a problem with the police acting on the threats he was making,

but if he'd said "if I were in the mideast and the women supported ISIS" nobody would complain. That's what I mean, it's too subjective.

but he didn't say that. that's the difference. he praised elliot rodgers and threatened to do the same thing

it's pretty rare when something like this actually happens. like the article says, the only reason the cops came is because multiple people got the sense that this guy was a fucking psychopath.

well, look orangeslices, suffice my position as follows.

I don't like being given consitutional rights along with phrases added later "except such and such, somebody think such and such..."

Nothing in your bowman threat indicated jest. You seemed pissed. How would we know?

Acting on it yes, but did he commit a crime to be charged with?

I'd say making repeated threats to kill a bunch of people is a crime, whether online or off.

    I can respect that.

But there are exceptions to every rule, and threats of that nature need to be dealt with seriously, IMO.

What if you don't say it, but just think it? Is that a crime?

    Being insane isn't a crime.

What is the crime. This guy hasn't been charged. It's not against a specific person. I think this would be a tough one to get a conviction on. Maybe some kind of menacing charge that would be a misdemeanor? Your threat to Steve bowman could look very real to a lot of people. Might want to rethink that shit.
