I am pissed off about not being able to easily purchase a machine gun, truth be told. But, I have several friends that do in fact own them. You can legally own a machine gun, you just set yourself up for all kinds of ATF inspections and such.
You are correct that it is illegal (I believe) to import or create any MORE machine guns for civilian ownership, so what is available is available and there will never be any more for legal ownership. So, if I want one i have to wait like a year for paperwork to go through, and then fork out like 10 grand for a shitty uzi because there are a finite amount of them available.
